Decorated with visual designs and stylistics of this year’s European Capitals of Culture – Matera (Italy) and Plovdiv (Bulgaria) – two trolleys with congratulations messages have already hit the streets of Kaunas, Lithuania.
“We wanted to make a surprise for the people of Plovdiv and Matera, to celebrate these Capitals of Culture in an original way, as well as spread the news about Kaunas becoming the European Capital of Culture in 2022 at the same time“, says Kaunas 2022 representatives.
In fact, the photo of a trolley, saluting Plovdiv, was recently taken by a Bulgarian visitor in Kaunas even before introducing the trolleys publically. He shared a photo he had taken with his phone on Facebook and unexpectedly it received thousands of reactions and hundreds of shares.
Representatives of Kaunas 2022 were delighted to see this kind of reaction on social media because it showed that by decorating old trolleys, information about Kaunas spread as well.
Trolleys dedicated to Plovdiv and Matera are a part of a bigger project “Atia senienos, labas naujienos!” (“Bye bye oldies, hello newies!”) organized by the municipality of Kaunas city. By saying goodbye to the dated and old trolleys, a 100 of them were turned into street art on wheels.
Artists and creative organizations of Kaunas can suggest their ideas for trolleys’ new looks and the best ones are executed by talented artists. The exhibition of these newly painted trolleys will be arranged at the end of the year. The team of “Kaunas 2022” is an active participant of this project.
