The pandemic that has made the world stop not only encouraged the creators of culture to re-examine their mission and quickly find alternative ways of doing things, but opened up the vital necessity of culture and arts for the audience confronted with the crisis. Life has changed unrecognisably: textile factories are making masks, automobile plants are producing respirators, perfumeries are making disinfectants. And what about culture? What significance will culture gain in the post-pandemic world and how will we change as its audience and participants?

The third European Capital of Culture Forum organised by “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022” will take place on May 20–22. It goes virtual and invites for discussion on the significance of culture. Organised in partnership with the Creative Europe Desk Lithuania, the Forum invites the European artists, cultural creators, private and public sectors to exchange their views on the challenges faced by cultural sector as well as changes, innovations under the crisis conditions and the future of culture in the post-pandemic world.

“Progressive examples of cultural actions and adaptation provide hope that we are capable of getting over this critical time, also becoming stronger. We will invite the participants of this virtual forum to join the speakers and discuss the experience of the cultural sector developed in a critical situation, as well as the opportunities that have emerged. We will discuss the insights of culture triggered by our confrontation with the crisis, how do the European cultural creators and organisers experience quarantine and its consequences, and what are the possible scenarios for reorientation of arts and culture”, says Ana Čižauskienė, Head of the Programme at “Kaunas 2022”.

According to Ana Čižauskienė, the programme of the Forum will consist of the presentations given by prominent cultural representatives. The Forum participants will be invited to join the speakers at four virtual discussion sessions and pose them questions. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to the significance of culture in a crisis period, the third – to the scenarios of cultural and artistic developments and the future. The second day of the Forum will be organised in partnership with the Creative Europe Desk Lithuania and will be dedicated to discussions on the response to the crisis by the culture funding institutions, as well as the possibilities of preserving international networking.

All discussions of the Forum will be broadcasted live. The Forum will be held in English, with the exception of the session “Culture in the Measures of Management of the Economic Crisis”, which will be held in Lithuanian.
