Kaunas European Capital of Culture 2022 institution announces an open call for Lithuanian and foreign cultural organisations to jointly create the programme of the European Capital of Culture programme for 2020–2022.
It is the main call for a three-year partnership. After the call, it is expected to draw around 50 agreements. Organisations are invited to make the proposals for projects in accordance with the topics of programmes developed by Kaunas 2022 or propose new ideas that would meaningfully enrich the common programme of the European Capital of Culture and other activities.
„We expect to receive unique ideas for the programme that would be interesting not only here in Lithuania, but in Europe as well, attract those who love culture from all over the world and help promote Kaunas as a city of the contemporary culture. Together we invite the representatives of cultural organisations to treat this as an opportunity to establish long-term local and international partnerships and include new audiences,” says Ms. Virginija Vitkienė, head of Kaunas 2022.
The full list of criteria on the basis of which the applications submitted will be evaluated will be published within the rules of the open call on the website of Kaunas European Capital of Culture 2022, but Kaunas 2022 representatives claim that the most important ones feature the widest possible accessibility of the initiative to the society, relevance of the topic on the European level, and innovativeness of the cultural content suggested.
Proposals for partnerships can be submitted by all Lithuanian non-profit cultural organisations or combinations thereof, also foreign cultural organisations through partners in Lithuania. All activities proposed must be planned in Kaunas and Kaunas District for 2020–2022 and it must mainly focus on the year of the European Capital of Culture.
Organisations are hereby invited to submit proposals until 25 October 2019. The list of organisations to enter the partnership agreements for the implementation of the European Capital of Culture programme will be announced on November 29. Kaunas 2022, which is funded by the state, Kaunas City and Kaunas District municipalities, will in its turn fund up to 80 per cent of budget for the implementation of projects proposed. Applications will be evaluated in accordance with the criteria established by a commission. The commission will be formed from the representatives of Kaunas City and District municipalities and independent experts.
From 21 August 2019 until the final deadline for application submission (October 25), Kaunas 2022 programme curators will consult everyone interested about the application submission process (prior registration by email required) every Wednesday and Friday. The public presentation of the open call and replies to the questions about it are planned on September 4, 4.00 PM in the Meeting Hall of Kaunas City Municipality.
About Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022
Kaunas was awarded the title of the European Capital of Culture on 29 March 2017, when the programme prepared by the initiative group was acknowledged as the best among other city candidates of Lithuania. Preparation to implement the project started immediately after the title was awarded. Currently there is a team of 35 people working with Kaunas 2022 which implements the programme of 8 areas. It is headed by Ms. Virginija Vitkienė, project initiator, PhD in art history and criticism, former long-time director of Kaunas Biennial.
