With fiery steps towards the goal: Introductory opening events in Kaunas city and district
From Čekiškė to Palemonas, from Šilainiai to Aleksotas – the inauguration of the year of the Capital of Culture will be lit up in the outermost districts of Kaunas district and will step-by-step reach the city centre. The artistic accents will become the heralds waking up the Mythical Beast of Kaunas. Residents are invited to join the musical percussion miniatures dedicated to the Mythical Beast and perform them with professional musicians. Just bring sounding objects that everyone can find at home – even pots and buckets will do! In the opening events, choirs and ensembles will join together for the ritual of awakening the Mythical Beast of Kaunas, and memorable moments will be illuminated by a mysterious light and fire shows (participants: Arkadijus Gotesmanas, Ritmas kitaip, Viduramžiai.lt).

The story of this palace dates back to when the building was the residence of the Governor of Kaunas; it was later visited by the German Kaiser. The palace has witnessed many dramas – ups, downs and wars – of Kaunas and the whole of Lithuania over nearly two hundred years. 13:00 - 15:00 THE 13TH KAUNAS BIENNIAL: DARYA KARALKOVA PROJECT “HOME, UNCANNY HOME“ VMU Art Gallery “101“, Muitinės str. 7The 13th Kaunas Biennial “Once Upon Another Time… gyveno jie jau kitaip“, presents a special lecture-performance by Darya Karalkova (Belarus). The artist will lead the audience on her film development process explaining chosen forms to illustrate the concept of being outrooted, digital/live version of the performance will present a reflection on the problem gesture. The lecture is a part of the special project for the 13th Kaunas Biennial with the Belarusian students from the European Humanities University, coordinated by Artūras Raila (Lithuania). The exposition is open to the public at the VMU Art Gallery “101“.

Hundreds of people from Kaunas, Lithuania and abroad have worked for this evening for several years. It will be a show that Kaunas has not seen since its foundation – a fusion of contemporary music, giant video projections and poetry that tells the story of the city as a living, constantly renewing miracle. The aim of this event, unique and ambitious in idea and scope, is to involve everyone and anyone in the city’s creative uprising. Those who won’t be able to attend will be invited to watch the opening broadcast everywhere across the European Union and worldwide and to use inspiration to build a new post-pandemic future.
As the show reaches its climax, the programme will spread in Kaunas and invite everyone to immerse themselves in a unique game of Mythical Beast on the city streets. Look for a special game map!

11:00 - 17:00 THE 13TH KAUNAS BIENNIAL: EMILIJA ŠKARNULYTĖ “ABSOLUTE DATING” Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Zoology Museum, Laisvės av. 106Emilija Škarnulytė’s immersive installation is inspired by the Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum’s displays. For her performative, cinematic piece she brings together the poetic and scientific to create a sensory experience that investigates the philosophical concept of Deep Time and events on a geological scale. This story of survival through time, unfolds with the choreography of artificial lights and sounds. Škarnulytė’s work evokes time travel and can be understood as a form of archeology of the future. Here, she investigates the unknown, including pre- and post-human evolution and adaptation, the current intersecting structures of power and the devastating effects of climate change. Galaunė House-Museum (Vydūno alley 2)The exhibition is dedicated to one of the most exciting and mysterious architects, engineers and interior designers of the interwar period, Arnas Funkas (1898-1957). He implemented the principles of functionalism in residential and public architecture in Kaunas. IT’S OKAY…” Kaunas Artists’ House (Putvinskio street 56)The play is about the daily experiences and painful experiences of a deaf girl, Saulė, growing up in a hearing world. Everything changes when the girl meets a new friend, sign language; this becomes salvation for the girl trapped in silence, while it is just the beginning in real life. The play is performed in silence to give the audience a better understanding of the girl’s world, with deaf actors playing the leading roles. 13:00 - 13:40 PERFORMANCE “BUTOH. MOVEMENTS OF MEMORY” The underground passage of Kaunas Railway Station (M. K. Čiurlionio street 16)The performance of butoh choreography by four dancers will be an engaging experience, inviting us to feel the world around us and ourselves, to respond in movement to the unfolding of history and its wounds. Butoh is a modern dance genre that emerged in the 1960s. It is characterised by strong tragic emotions, slow movements, and a desire to get closer to the original energy. Combining these genre traits, the performance “Butoh. Movements of Memory” invites to explore the theme of the Holocaust through the art of movement. The choreography is by Tebby W. T. Ramasike, a dancer and choreographer from South Africa. The performance of the choreographer himself will take place in September 2022 at the Kaunas IX Fort Museum. 16:00 - 17:30 POETRY AND MUSIC SYNTHESIS “LOUD WORDS” Vytautas Magnus University, Main hall (S. Daukanto street 28)Vytautas Magnus University and the Kaunas Literature Week festival will start the year with an event dedicated to the synthesis of poetry and music. The event will feature the renowned Cuban poet and musician Omar Perez, who accompanies his poems with a drum, weaving lyricism, humour, and salsa rhythms into an inimitable artistic fusion. The event will also feature Lithuania’s most prominent artist in this field, National Prize winner Rolandas Rastauskas, who will present his poetry for the first time together with guitar virtuoso Juozas Milašius. 16:00 - 18:30 EXHIBITION BY MARTINE FEIPEL AND JEAN BECHAMEIL (LU) Gallery “Meno parkas” (Rotušės square 27)The duo of Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil (LU) allows the imagination, feelings of instability and allogeneity to flourish in their works, even though the reality of their art is a controlled and defined contemporary world. In this exhibition, the artists explore the utopias that have shaped the 20th-century worldview, loaded with symbols that glorify industry, while critically examining the situation we find ourselves in. The world premiere of Kaunas Cantata will take place in autumn 2022. The cantata is an immersive experience of music and visual projections, inviting the audience to delve into the city’s multi-century past and complex history. Excerpts from the cantata will be performed by the Sejny Theatre Klezmer Orchestra, singer Rafael Karpis, Bella Shirin, Student string orchestra and Kaunas choir singers. The musical composition is the result of a collaboration with visual artist Jenny Kagan (UK), director Chris Baldwin (UK) and local music communities.

Yes, a person who has purchased a free registration ticket online must present a ticket and a valid National Covid-19 Certificate (or the alternative document) to the organizers when entering the event area.
Organizers highlight that the event will take place outside, therefore attendees should choose clothes according to the temperature and weather conditions at that time. It is recommended to wear warm, winter season clothes, which protects from low temperature, wind, rain, snow or other bad weather conditions.
How can they reach the event in more comfortable way? People who would like to enter the sector dedicated to persons with special needs should not only provide the ticket, National COVID-19 Certificate (or alternative documents) but The Disability Certificate of The Certificate of Special Needs. Trained volunteers will assist attendees in this sector. From January 22 the road section of Karalius Mindaugas prospect from M. K. Čiurlionis bridge to Birštonas street will be closed. Moreover, in the period of January 22-23, the traffic in these streets will be closed as well: The map of traffic and closed streets: information wil be updated soon
The map of the event with directions will be emailed to everyone who has purchased free registration tickets. Attendees can only enter their sector (which is indicated on the ticket) through the gate of that sector.

Most of these activities are free of charge. However, in the detailed programme of the opening weekend events, the note “Paid” is added to the paid events.
Look for The Beast of Kaunas City Secrets game in the event area of the INFO points (you can download the map HERE). On the map, there are listed locations where you can find the letters of the Beast. Going through these locations, you have to collect them and in this way form the sentence. The first 1000 winners formed the correct sentence will be awarded Kaunas 2022 prizes. The detailed instructions are listed on the map.
