Hiroaki Umeda is a choreographer and a multidisciplinary artist now recognized as one of the leading figures of the Japanese avant-garde art scene. The place where he transports the public through his performance appears to be a parallel universe. A completely dark space where the audience and the artist’s body are to be found. On the wall and on the floor, virtual graphic images take the shape of organic particles. Accompanied by electronic sound, they come to life by synchronizing with the human body. The stage transforms into a place where the boundary separating human and digital reality is blurred.
Event presented by: EU-Japan Fest, Autotoja, Toyota Dealership in Kaunas, Kaunas City Municipality.

It is a contemporary performance focused on suppressed inner emotions by Berlin
based Japanese choreographer Keisuke Sugawara. The idea was inspired by the Japanese idiom “HIKA-KOUGAI (悲歌慷慨)”, which means sadness-ridden inner anger at the evils of the times and one’s own failures. In Japanese culture, modesty and protecting other people’s feelings is the highest value, instilled from an early age, but how much unspilled emotion is buried inside to protect others? How do we experience anger in society? Can we capture a phenomenon that is happening in our bodies that is difficult to recognise?

Hiratsuka (平塚市 = Hiratsuka-shi) is a Japanese city located in 1889 in Shionajo, on the right bank (west side) of the Sakami River, in the centre of Kanagawa Prefecture. Hiratsuka’s population currently stands at almost 260 000. The city is famous for the Tanabata Love Festival, celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th month, when, according to legend, two stars in love, Altaïr and Vega, separated by the Bird’s Footpath, may meet once a year. The city of Hiratsuka has warmly welcomed the Lithuanian Olympians for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, providing accommodation and the best training conditions.
