About the project
“With this project as artists coming from the field of contemporary dance, we seek to create a dance excursion which could help to spread the ideas of modernistic architecture, its value and address the need to preserve, keep and embody frequently unestimated modernist buildings. Contemporary dance is a great and “up to date” tool that could serve this mission. From previous experiences we come with the notion that many times dance is used to fill the space, immerse in it, use “here and now” inspiration. Whatsoever, we feel that quite rarely dance practitioners embody the building taking into account its ‘genetics’, architectural features, history. Contemporary dance many times is abstract and can have an expression of various styles, forms. This is why it focuses on what dancer can express while dancing, or what inspires him/her in the moment of “here and now”. With this artistic research we would like to have slightly different approach.
Firstly, we would question and search on ways where contemporary dance forms of expression can merge with ones coming from modernistic architecture – aesthetically functional, minimal and non-ornamental. Thus, it would create synergetic effect for dance and the building. We would work on how particular bodily motion qualities, compositions can embody and create a feeling of shapes, spaces, atmosphere and the aesthetics of the building in general.
Secondly, research would focus on collecting valuable information about the building itself – stories, legends, myths, memories, historical events. During the project we will use field recording/soundscape compositional method – recording the sounds of outside, noise of streets, conversations of people. After recording the collected sounds will be layered one over the other, so, new sound synthesis will be created. In this way, we will not only embody the modernistic building with our bodily motions, but also, we will give a “live feeling” to it with specially designed soundtrack.”
