About the project
During his residency, project called “Stories of the North Slope” Martynas Timinskas will do a sound research and create a piece of sound art and electronic music, reflecting the identity of the northern Žaliakalnis slope, called Brazilka, and interpreting the dynamics of its sounds and social relations.
The narrative of music is constructed on the basis of the stories of the residents of the neighborhood and the sounds recorded during the field research. Musical instruments and their sounds are used in this project as well. To get a context of everyday life in Brazilka, residents will be interviewed with the focus on community rituals, everyday activities (e.g. bringing water, showeling snow, etc.), entertainment, songs, and children’s games.
Animal sounds are another important part of the sound and social identity of the neighborhood. Brazilka has many trees, so it is loved by wild birds. Meanwhile, the residents here have not only dogs and cats as pets, but they used to keep chickens or sometimes even goats for food.
The sounds of the city, nature, the memories of the inhabitants, the interpretations of the traditions will be combined into a single piece of music. It will be illustrated with some archival material, photographs and videos of the creative process.
