The modern architecture in Kaunas lies at the base of this project. It is called “Outside the lines” (working title). The work process begins with a formal study that traces the historical documentation of iconic modernist architectural structures built in Kaunas at a time simultaneous with an increase in the construction of internationally styled buildings in Tel Aviv. Following the documentation, I intend to create a visual and graphic lexicon with the accumulated findings, based on the frontal view and contours of the buildings, similar to the original plans by the architect which were presumably designed and drawn on paper.

The drawings will undergo digital processing and will be cut using a CNC router, resulting in a series of stencils made of plexiglass in various colors. The stencils will be employed for the creation of a series of pastel on paper drawings, forming layers of lines and shapes that render an imaginary grid and a new aesthetic, that serves as an alternative, poetic mapping of modernist Kaunas based on the research and documentation. The collection of drawings will be scanned and displayed both in the exhibition space and in various locations around the city.

The inspiration for the project stems from the straight line of a ruler measuring from one point to another, a distinct modernist tool and symbol of an architect at work. The stencil drawing which is often associated with childhood stimulates a playful and random experiment in which drawing “outside the lines” is the only constant.
