3D interpretations of Kaunas Modernism
Mantas Kuginis
A multidisciplinary designer and creator of digital art. A Kaunas resident who has lived in this city since birth. Rounded balconies, stair details, horizontal and vertical stripes of Kaunas, that also give meaning to the theme of modernism, appeared to Mantas, although seen many times, but very unique and authentic. Knowing about their uniqueness, the author wants to increase the awareness of this field by engaging and reaching a wider audience.
The project “3DKaunas Interpretations of Kaunas Modernism” visually resembles Mantas’ previous work “The Reminiscences of Optimism”. The previously formed stylistics of the creator is also used for the latter cycle, using historical material, photographs and other documentation necessary for the work. The aim is to reflect the elements of the visual stylistics of the time as authentically as possible with modern means and tools.
This project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture. Information partner: “Kaunas 2022 – European Capital of Culture”.
3D interpretations of Kaunas Modernism
The cycle of interpretations of Kaunas modernism consists of 3D graphic works interpreting Kaunas interwar modernist architecture and design through a modern prism. The cycle was created by the photorealistic digital 3D modeling technique, which is still rarely found in the advanced art sphere in Lithuania. The restored motifs of Kaunas interwar architecture are transformed into new forms, which in the end result resemble digital 3D assemblies. The author hopes that the modern and attractive form of 3D graphic works created during the project will stimulate interest in the unique part of Kaunas heritage, which has been included in the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List, and will pay attention not only to the whole, but also to its unique details.
The cycle consists of works depicting a dessert and coffee to announce cake baking and decorating workshops, which were implemented together with students and teachers of Kaunas Food Industry and Trade Training Center. The cakes created during the workshop and acquired the authentic look of Kaunas modernist buildings became the “stars” and real decorations of the video art project about Kaunas modernist architecture created by the Irish artist Aideen Barry. Also abstract monochrome compositions that complement the visual identity of the Kaunas 2022 program “Modernism for the Future”.
