The legend of Ariogala and Betygala

The legend tells that a Roman duke Palemonas once paddled with his men up the river Dubysa. Somewhere around Ariogala he asked: ‘Ar yra galas?‘ (‘Is there an end to it?’) As they went a little higher up, the duke chose a place for the night and said confidently, ‘Bet yra galas!‘ (‘But there is an end!’) And so, this was how Ariogala and Betygala received their names from the Roman duke Palemonas.
