“Cultural participation and societal wellbeing: the strategic scenario of the new European agenda for culture”

In his presentation Sacco discussed the perspectives opened by the New EU Agenda for Culture in terms of the potential of cultural participation in the pursuit of societal wellbeing. The topic presents a high relevance both from the research and the policy making agenda, and the two aspects are tightly connected. It is therefore expected that significant opportunities will emerge in the next few years at the EU level, and that European Capitals of Culture will be able to position themselves as ideal laboratories in this regard. Participants had walked away with a clearer perspective on how the ECoC program can open up possibilities for local development and wellbeing for European communities as a consequence of the new cultural policy orientations of the EU Commission and with some inspiration about concrete possibilities for action.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Pier Luigi Sacco is a professor of cultural economics at the IULM university in Milan, he is also a co-director of the Computational Human Behaviour Lab (CHuBLab) at Bruno Kessler Foundation in Trento, a senior researcher at the metaLAB in Harvard, and a visiting scholar at Harvard university. Besides, Pier Luigi Sacco is a special advisor to the European Commissioner for education and culture, also a member of the European Research Advisory Board, Economics of Culture Committee of the Italian Ministry of Culture, Advisory Council for Research & Innovation of the Czech Republic and Advisory Council of Creative Georgia. He works, consults and gives keynotes internationally in the fields of culture-led local development.
