Sound and installation artist, experimental filmmaker and DJ from Vienna, Austria, Brigitta Bödenauer has been active as DJ in Vienna’s noise and experimental scene since the early 1990s. Her visual work has been always inspired by and strongly connected to music. Extensive experiments – driven by her fascination for the sensuality of movement and material – mark the beginning of each of her works. The various techniques she is employing are always strongly linked and corresponding to the underlying concept of each particular piece. By using a set of software applications and developing environments combined with analogue techniques, material passes through the stages of creation, collection, deconstruction and decontextualization. She creates fleeting spaces by employing various acoustic and/or visual means often addressing the intangible, the hidden, or what eludes perception.
She has collaborated with musicians, such as PRSZR (Rafał Iwanski, Pure), CoH (Ivan Pavlov), Miguel Carvalhais, Susanna Gartmayer or Peter Kutin. Her films received a number of awards including the First Prize at the Diagonale Festival 2004 in Graz in the category “Innovative Cinema” and the “Best Abstract Film” at the London International Animation Festival in 2008. She teaches and writes on film and visual media.
While on residency in Matters_, part of “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022”, Brigitta will engage into soundresearch of industrial spaces of the city which will result in a live concert. She will also prepare a soundscape of the city which will be published along with the pieces composed by two previous residents of the programme, William Bilwa Costa and Donia Jourabchi, by the end of the 2018.
Brigitta’s residency in Kaunas 2022 programme Matters_ is supported by Austrian Federal Chancellery.
